When my oldest son started school in the fall of 2006, it didn’t take me long to think that there may be an issue with him learning to read. By Grade 3 he had been diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities. School has proven to be our own version of hell ever since. This is why when my youngest son began school in the fall of 2016, it was obvious to me immediately that he too was heading down a difficult path in education. Conventional methods and medication have failed my children. It wasn’t until I learned of the Davis program that I felt there actually could be a better way.

I met online with Sue Hall and another associate of The Whole Dyslexic Society in early 2021. This was the first time in 15 years that I felt hopeful, understood and supported. It’s the first time that I heard someone say that my children didn’t need to be fixed, they simply needed a different way to be taught. I am forever grateful for the bursary money that was gifted to our family, it is the only reason both of my sons were able to participate in the Davis programs they each required. I am encouraged by the changes we have already seen in the boys and I feel a profound sense of hope that as we continue to learn and practice the Davis techniques and tools that my children will thrive alongside their gifts.

Thank you, Lisa M, June 22, 2021

We (a school in Saskatchewan) are incredibly grateful for the support we have received from your organization; it has enabled us to utilize tools that would have been impossible to access otherwise. Because of your support, we are even more excited and hopeful about our ability to transform the learning experience for our students. ~Educators attending the DLS workshop

Bobby received a bursary from WDS late last year and he went on to do a Reading program with me.  Once he completed it he enrolled at VCC in 2 English classes.  Although depression was a constant for him through the winter especially he remained dedicated and still got A’s in both classes.  So now he has officially graduated from high school, and is starting to believe in what he is capable of - good story, right?

But there is more - With this new found confidence and belief in himself he applied to Langara’s theatre program “Studio 58” (theatre is his dream).  This involved an audition for which he was very nervous.  Normally it takes 2 to 3 auditions and applications to be accepted, Bobby was accepted with his first try!  He is now gardening his way (my garden just gets better and better) to an ADHD program so he can manage his life and those important “Life Concepts" in a more regulated way.  Good story continues, right?

To add to that….He also received help from the tax expert WDS mentioned to him during his interview AND he got organized with their help, and received some back issued tax credit funding - he bought himself a computer (was using the library ones for his time at VCC), a printer, a  bike, and paid off his debts.  As you can imagine he feels excited about his future.  His confidence in his own abilities has really improved… This brings us to May; there will be more to come, of that I’m sure :) ~ Sue Jutson, Davis Facilitator in Vancouver

Three years ago a boy in Kindergarten was struggling with reading and letter reversals. His teacher took a Davis Learning Strategies Workshop so she could reach all the children in her class, regardless of their learning style. She is now a powerful advocate of these skills – she loves to see her children reaching their July outcomes by the previous November. She loves seeing them ask to stay in at recess to write stories. She loves that the children with the gift of dyslexia are catered for, and she is pleasantly surprised to see that the typical linear-sequential learners are having to be more creative.

The course has made a difference in my life, by having helpful info to offer parents and people in my own family.” I got so much out of it. It was actually rather life-changing! It seems that the more we know, the more there is to learn. Now that I understand that I too am dyslexic, but think in both pictures and words, there is so much to learn about recognizing the harder to recognize dyslexics. It also tells me that there must be many more people who would benefit from the Ron Davis Program than I ever thought before!” ~DLS participant

All the things they say should happen after the program, have happened. It’s made a huge difference in his reading and writing. As a parent I can endorse it 100 percent. As a Headmaster, I don’t work with dyslexic kids myself, but I’ve never seen anything like this program. ~Parent of Davis Programs participant

His level of self-confidence has gone up at school this year, he is doing better in class, he scored high on a science test and has thwarted the moves of a school bully. He told me that in science he could close his eyes and see the formula for a chemical compound that he needed to know! ~Parent of Davis Programs participant
