‍ ‍PREVENTION

We have always been passionate about DLS for K-3 Classroom Teachers, having hosted at least 7 Workshops since 2002.

Julie Brewer attended one of these workshops and being a Montessori Early Childhood Educator she adapted the strategies for her 3-5 year olds. She found they truly provide the self management tools and foundations for basic literacy skills which result in a NeuroInclusive opportunity for all children as they prepare for school. Part of our goal to prevent learning challenges from day one.

NeuroInclusivity for Early Years:

In 2023, the Ministry of Education and Child Care in British Columbia, asked BCcampus to invite new opportunities for the professional development of Early Childhood Educators. Thanks to Julie’s experience we felt confident in creating a professional development pilot for Early Childhood Educators, “NeuroInclusivity for Early Years”.

This professional development training provided participants with unique, simple skills to teach students how to better focus their minds and have their bodies ready for learning

The course involved an Interview, two background information modules and a two day Workshop followed by monthly assignments for each strategy, plus an optional parent information module .

By incorporating these strategies into preschools, we now know this is the first step to achieving NeuroInclusivity for all students, no matter their learning styles and the demise of so-called learning disabilities.

We are grateful to the Ministry of Education & Child Care, who funded the pilot and allowed us, The Whole Dyslexic Society, the opportunity of sharing this innovative, inspiring, enlightening and essential information for FREE!

However, there is more! The Alberta Aboriginal Head Start Association requested a second pilot for 2026. We changed the format slightly, having learned from the first one and once again were fortunate to have Stacey Smith present the core two day workshop: Davis® Learning Strategies for Early Years. One more pilot, hopefully with University involvement, and we will be ready to go viral !!!

Davis Learning Strategies K-3:

The format of these workshops is under review and we will post details asap.

When they resume The Whole Dyslexic Society can fund Canadians $150CAN towards their workshop fee. Simply email us at info@thewds.org for further information.

Davis Learning Strategies

  • are a complete package comprised of Self Regulation Tools, Alphabet Mastery, Reading Skills and Word Mastery

  • are easy to learn in 2 days by the classroom teacher

  • reach all the children in the class regardless of learning style

  • level the playing field between the linear sequential sound based learner (who typically does well in our current education system) and the visual spatial image based learner (who typically gets labelled learning disabled).

  • provide an equal cognitive opportunity for all children

  • are cost effective, negating the need for the current level of special education staff

  • Teachers benefit when the children learn to regulate themselves; they spend less time managing which frees up more time for teaching.

“All of our staff started implementing the tools immediately, and we have begun seeing some quick improvement with several students. When using the focusing tools, one student said, "last year, I had a really hard time focusing and getting my work done. This year, I can stay focused much easier and get my work done every day."

Another student began making their spelling words in clay and their spelling tests have improved dramatically. While others have used simple tools like spell-reading and their spelling tests results have dramatically improved.

This is after implementing only the basic tools. I am excited to see the progress we will make as we are able to implement all of the tools and strategies.

We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received from your organization; it has enabled us to utilize tools that would have been impossible to access otherwise. Because of your support, we are even more excited and hopeful about our ability to transform the learning experience for our students. ~~ A School in Saskatchewan

“I wanted to take a moment to send a BIG Thank You to the Society for the scholarship allowing me to attend the Davis Learning Strategies Workshop back in the fall. At the time I had no idea how much those 2 days would change my experience while working through the Davis method with my student whom I'm a tutor for. I was able to come back to our sessions together with the knowledge and confidence I needed to bring her through this school year work in Davis. It was so rewarding to watch her flourish and blossom in her learning. I know that with your investment in me this past year I will be able to bring hope to many more students and their families not only this coming school year but for my entire career as special education assistant. One little seed turns into something so beautiful.

Thank you for the blessing,” ~~Megan Davis
