“The discovery that your child has a learning difficulty can be a frightening, disorientating experience.  Many parents worry that, although they feel they understand their child, they don’t feel they understand his dyslexia. Just as the hardworking dyslexic child is left with feelings of inadequacy after every class test, so his caring, dedicated parents are left feeling ineffectual when they sit down to help him with his homework.” Richard Whitehead, Why Tyrannosaurus But Not If?

INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLANS:

Julie Brewer (3).jpg

Julie Brewer, WDS Director, and Montesorri teacher.

Julie is the mother of a ‘corrected’ dyslexic son and is currently enjoying being able to use Davis Learning Strategies with her pre-school Montessori Class. She brings a wealth of knowledge that she has collected along her parental journey into learning challenges. Julie has curated the following resources to assist parents in accessing available tools and resources in the school system.

Be sure to check out her Technology resource page HERE

Make sure your child’s IEP includes all the accommodations you want on it. You have the ability to include your own goals and supports. You are your child’s advocate and if you don’t speak up, things will be left unsaid. Do your research and ask other dyslexics what extra supports they use. Every dyslexic is different and has individual needs. It’s all about figuring out the best options for your child. No matter what school district your child is in, there should be a contact person with a title of/similar to: “Assistive and Educational Technology Inclusion Coach”.

I only discovered this person a year and a half after my son’s designation. No one told me about this resource. I had to discover it on my own through multiple calls to the school board office looking for help. Once I found this person, she was so incredibly helpful in setting up and using the in-class tech accommodations for my son and myself, as we navigated through all the new technology noise. With her help we discovered and tried many useful tools.

Here is a useful site for further IEP information: Individual Education Plans - A Guide for Parents HERE.

Quick Tip: You can ask for your child to be told who their teacher is before school starts, and you can ask for at least 2 friends to be in their class.

Vision Therapy: Many children with dyslexia also have an underlying vision challenge. Davis has always maintained that we need to check out anything ‘structural’ first. Even if an Optometrist concludes a child has perfect sight, a more in depth test from a Vision Therapist may uncover a physical glitch. For example, Binocular Tracking when reading (how the eyes work together while reading multiple words). https://www.neurovisualperformance.ca/.

Footnote from Sue Hall: I have a personal, unscientific suspicion that our real eyes often follow our Mind's Eye when we disorient, and this might appear to be a tracking issue.

SketchNotes – Following her TEDx talk, Sue received an incredible keepsake thanks to Deborah Le Frank of www.visuallifestories.com. Deborah listened to the talk and sketched the main points – you can see everything here ! Check out her Visual Life Stories and Verbal to Visual. I think learning to sketchnote would be a huge asset for anyone studying, taking notes, or trying to get their thoughts onto paper. When a child is basically looking at an ‘Imax theatre it’s too much all in one go. A film doesn’t start in the top left hand corner, its not linear, it moves, there’s often sound and colour. Getting small sketches of the main points onto paper; numbering the sketches for order, and then writing from the numbered sequence will get creative writing underway.
